As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once the left their nets and followed him.
After John [the Baptist] was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming to good news of God. “The time has come,” he said, “the kingdom if God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.
When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
The proclamation is the same today as when Jesus first said it all those years ago. The time has come, the kingdom of God is near. Repent (exchange the pursuit of our own agenda for a new one – a life surrendered to God’s plan) and believe the good news (about the ever-expanding kingdom of God and it’s king, Jesus).
The invitation is the same as well – “Come follow me.” Jesus has invited each of us to follow him. What an amazing adventure! We’re going to need his instruction, his encouragement, and his empowerment along the way.
Consider these three questions:
• Do I believe that Jesus is the king of God’s kingdom? What is his kingdom (his realm)?
• Am I pursuing my own, or am I submitted to God’s agenda for my life?
• What would it look like for me to respond to Jesus’ invitation, “Come follow me.”?
God, we certainly need the goodness and beauty of your kingdom right here on earth, as it is in heaven. That you are here extending your reign every day is such great news! King Jesus, teach me to follow you, even if that is different from what I’ve known so far. Help me to extend your invitation to others as well as I try to love like you did. Spirit of God open my ears to hear your voice guiding me in this adventurous life in your kingdom.
