Give Us Our Daily Bread

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:9-15   Reflections: The Lord’s Prayer is perhaps one of the most famous prayers in Christian history. It is how Jesus taught his disciples to pray. In it, he includes this phrase, “Give us today our daily bread.” When the disciples heard this they would have immediately thought of God feeding God’s people in the desert (Exodus 16). God gave bread from heaven every day to feed the people. They would have intuitively remembered the people of Israel groaning and complaining and they would have remembered God’s faithfulness to the......

Lectio Divina - Jesus & Bread

Scripture Reading: John 6:25-59   Reflection #1 : Jesus gained quite a following after he had fed 5,000 people and walked on water. The disciples were continually confused by Jesus and his words and his ways. In John 6, the disciples can’t find Jesus. They are looking for him and finally find him on the “other side of the lake” (John 6:25). It’s a funny question that they ask Jesus once they find him. “Rabbi, when did you get here?” (John 6:26).  Practice #1:  As you approach time with Jesus this morning, spend some......

Five Loaves of Bread and Two Fish

Scripture Reading: John 6:1-15 6 After this Jesus went across the Galilee Sea (that is, the Tiberias Sea). 2 A large crowd followed him, because they had seen the miraculous signs he had done among the sick. 3 Jesus went up a mountain and sat there with his disciples. 4 It was nearly time for Passover, the Jewish festival. 5 Jesus looked up and saw the large crowd coming toward him. He asked Philip, “Where will we buy food to feed these people?” 6 Jesus said this to test him, for he already knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip replied, “More than......

Bread and Faithfulness

Scripture Reading: Exodus 16:4-11 4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I’m going to make bread rain down from the sky for you. The people will go out each day and gather just enough for that day. In this way, I’ll test them to see whether or not they follow my Instruction. 5 On the sixth day, when they measure out what they have collected, it will be twice as much as they collected on other days.” 6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “This evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of......

How will God provide for us now?

Scripture Reading | Exodus 16:1-10 16 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Sin desert, which is located between Elim and Sinai. They set out on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left the land of Egypt. 2 The whole Israelite community complained against Moses and Aaron in the desert. 3 The Israelites said to them, “Oh, how we wish that the Lord had just put us to death while we were still in the land of Egypt. There we could sit by the pots cooking meat......
